Love your many Sagan quotes who is one of my all time favorite people having taken one of his courses years ago when he was a visiting professor at Cornell and having visited the Puerto Rico Araceibo Telescope facility, which he was instrumental in constructing. You probably recall driving me to a Ventura cemetery several years ago, where I wanted to offer last respects for my Uncle Larry. Standing at his grave, I realized that since my family is so small, I would be his final visitor, forever. But like the song says, all of us are dust in the wind. How long will we be remembered? One hundred years from now, even those celebrities who famously identify themselves with one name - Cher, Sting, Madonna, Prince - will be a distant memory at best. Not to mention the original, Fabian. And of course, Trules. Who? Trules. One name? A rock star? Trules? Like you never existed. Today you already feel insignificant in the universe, but worry not, for your ultimate destiny has a happy ending. No, not in a heavenly massage parlor. Even better, for none other than the young Bob Dylan can be your eternal soulmate. Just imagine … your spirit floating around in the West Village, hanging out in Washington Square and Café Reggio, hearing his music in the air, smoking a joint as time goes by … 50, 150, 250 years … after centuries with no visitors, no readers, no audience and nobody to sing your praises, you’d normally be thirsting for attention … yet here you have finally found inner peace, transcending your ego, nightmare free, loving the scene … and happily, with each tick of the clock, evolving to become more and more like your erstwhile hero … a complete unknown.
I do remember driving you to your Uncle Larry’s final resting place. However, I’m afraid mine will be less corporeal. Like you say, “dust in the wind”. But if your vision for my “after life“ becomes my postmortem reality, I might actually become a very happy “complete unknown”.
